La banquise se disloque

Guilhem s'est installé pour une dizaine de jours dans une maison à Oqaatsut. Il a pu gagner ce petit village d'une cinquantaine d'habitants, pas très loin d’Ilulissat, en bateau. Il découvre maintenant la vie groenlandaise : aller chercher l'eau à la fontaine du village, allumer le poêle à pétrole, vivre au milieu des attelages. Les jours allongent énormément, il soigne ses doigts, s'adapte au jour le jour et fait beaucoup de photos malgré un temps très changeant. Hier la banquise près de l’endroit où accostent les bateaux s’est disloquée en 1000 morceaux qui obstruent l’entrée de la baie… Pourra-t’il repartir la semaine prochaine ?
De son côté Guillaume a rejoint en avion Aappilattoq, au nord d’Upernavik afin d’éviter la zone de glace la plus mauvaise. C’est un petit village où on connait tout le monde au bout de quelques jours et vice versa. Très pratique pour les invitations... Pour le café, pour aller pêcher, pour s'entraîner au fusil sur cible et visiter l'école. Il a été très bien accueilli par les 3 professeurs qui enseignent aux 11 élèves (ça fait rêver un prof en Belgique !). Les petits ont fait de très beaux dessins de leurs activités favorites (kayak, pêche, course de traineaux…) qui seront montrés aux élèves belges et français. Guillaume s’habitue bien au froid, -20° c'est confort après la lutte d'avant (-35°). Mais le vent est toujours là malgré tout… Côté gastronomie, il mange du poisson tout le temps, en tartine au petit déjeuner, cru sur la banquise pour tenir dehors et cuit ou frit le soir. Il a aussi goûté au phoque.
Mardi il a quitté Aappilattorq pour se lancer vers le nord. Après plus de 8h de ski et 20 km plus loin il a passé la nuit dans une cabane de chasseurs. Mercredi il a atteint Inarsuit, une très belle progression qu’on a pu suivre sur le tracé gps. Malheureusement, nous avons reçu depuis des messages expliquant que la banquise est extrêmement fragile dans cette zone aussi et qu’il a eu de belles frayeurs !… Il a heureusement pu rejoindre Inarsuit où il a été hébergé avec des chasseurs extrêmement sympathiques. A son grand regret, il ne peut pas continuer par la banquise vers Kullorsuaq, c’est beaucoup trop dangereux avec ce matériel léger et en solo.
Aujourd’hui on apprend qu’il est revenu à Aappilattorq vraisemblablement par la banquise, puisqu’il indique qu’il a pu passer in extremis (sinon c’était un mois de plus à Inarsuit…) et il a dû s’équiper du drysuit (combinaison étanche) car la banquise s’est trouée de partout. En 3 jours tout a changé : plus aucun traineau, que des bateaux !

Guilhem settled for about ten days in a house in Oqaatsut. He was able to reach this small village of about fifty inhabitants, not very far from Ilulissat, by boat. He now discovers Greenlandic life: fetching water from the village fountain, lighting the oil stove, living among the sled dogs. The days are very long, he cares for his fingers, adapts to the day-to-day life and takes a lot of pictures despite the very changing weather. Yesterday the ice pack near where the boats docked broke into 1000 pieces that block the entrance to the bay... Can he leave next week?
Guillaume flew to Aappilattoq, north of Upernavik, to avoid the worst ice zone. It is a small village where you know everyone after a few days and vice versa. Very useful for invitations.... For coffee, fishing, rifle training and visiting the school. He was very well welcomed by the 3 teachers who teach the 11 students (it is a dream come true for a teacher in Belgium!). The children have made very beautiful drawings of their favourite activities (kayaking, fishing, sled racing...) which will be shown to Belgian and French students. Guillaume is accustomed to the cold, -20° is comfort after the fight before (-35°). But the wind is still there nevertheless... On the gastronomic side, he eats fish all the time, on toast for breakfast, raw on the ice floe to stay out and cooked or fried in the evening. He also tasted the seal.
On Tuesday he left Aappilattorq to move north. After more than 8 hours of skiing and 20 km further he spent the night in a hunters' cabin. On Wednesday he reached Inarsuit, a very good progress that we were able to follow on the gps track. Unfortunately, we have since received messages explaining that the ice pack is extremely fragile in this area too and that he had some nice fears!... Fortunately, he was able to join Inarsuit where he is staying with extremely friendly hunters. To his great disappointment, he cannot continue through the ice floe to Kullorsuaq, it is much too dangerous with this light and solo equipment.
Today we learn that he returned to Aappilattorq probably by the ice pack, since he indicates that he was able to pass in extremis (otherwise it was one more month at Inarsuit...) and he had to equip himself with the dry suit because the ice pack was punctured from everywhere. In 3 days everything changed: no more sleds, only boats!
